Rochester Birding Association
Richard Fadok will deliver a lecture to the Rochester Birding Association on Smash the Crash and our efforts to prevent bird-window collisions in Rochester, New York.

CONFERENCE
Bird Collision Prevention Alliance
Richard Fadok will give a talk about integrating bird-window collisions and bird-safe design into undergraduate curricula at the 2025 Bird Collision Prevention Alliance’s virtual summit. His talk is titled “Teaching the Crisis: Reflections on a Feral Pedagogy.”

Frontispace Gallery
Mizin Shin and Richard Fadok curated a mixed-media exhibition of bird-window collision artwork in the University of Rochester’s Frontispace Gallery, including photographs, zines, and bird-safe prints.

American Ornithological Society
Brandon Molina put together a poster featuring results from our Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 building monitoring studies at the University of Rochester. He will present it at the 2025 annual meeting of the American Ornithological Society in St Louis, MO.

AWARD
Office of Undergraduate Research
Brandon Molina received a Research Presentation Award from the University of Rochester’s Office of Undergraduate Research. This award will allow him to attend the 2025 annual meeting of the American Ornithological Society and share results from our building monitoring studies.

Expanded Print Media
The Genesee Valley Audubon Society generously funded the printing of the bird-safe window films designed by Mizin Shin’s Expanded Print Media students. They will be installed over the summer at Sage Art Center.

Our Spring 2025 building monitoring study at the University of Rochester concluded.
WORKSHOP
Bird Collisions in the Anthropocene
Richard Fadok and Mizin Shin ran a public arts workshop in tandem with Holly Greenberg. Participants created fabric replicas of bird-collision victims for Greenberg’s project Bird Collisions in the Anthropocene and made prints of birds affected by collisions with Shin using drypoint techniques.

Mizin Shin held a final review of students’ bird-safe design projects in her printmaking course Expanded Print Media. Richard Fadok offered feedback.

LECTURE
Bird of Prey Days
Smash the Crash attended Bird of Prey Days, an annual event run by Braddock Bay Raptor Research. Richard Fadok gave a lecture about the initiative; María Fernanda Lizarazo made a poster; Mark Shih designed a brochure to give out; and William Jiang, Natthavee Kunathai, & Woochan Seo explained our work.

Rush Rhees Library
Mizin Shin and Richard Fadok curated an exhibition in the hallway of Rush Rhees Library featuring bird-safe designs created by students in her course Expanded Print Media. It will be on display through November 2025.

TOUR
University of Rochester
Brandon Molina led a bird walk around the University of Rochester’s River Campus, introducing participants to the bird species that can be sighted near the Genesee River and the threats posed to them by buildings.

Humanities Project
Richard Fadok and Mizin Shin received a Humanities Project grant from the University of Rochester’s Humanities Center to invite the artist Holly Greenberg to campus for a public arts workshop.
FESTIVAL
Sage Fest
Smash the Crash inspired the Sage Art Center to dedicate the theme of Sage Fest, an annual arts festival, to birds.

University Facilities and Services
Smash the Crash presented findings from their Fall 2024 building monitoring study at the University of Rochester data to University Facilities and Services. They recommended several building retrofits and changes to the official design standards, which the team agreed to adopt.

Richard Fadok gave an invited lecture at the State University of New York’s School of Environmental Science and Forestry. His lecture focused on Smash the Crash.

Mizin Shin taught a printmaking course at the University of Rochester. This course was centered on the creation of bird-safe window film designs. They will be installed around the Sage Art Center.

Daniel McDermott and Mark Shih developed a digital platform for mapping and visualizing bird-window collisions using ArcGIS.
